If your kitchen is the heart of the house, then the cabinets adorning the walls of your kitchen are like the ribs holding the heart in place. Cabinets are an important part of any kitchen. They are used to store utensils and food stock and serve a great utilitarian purpose. No wonder kitchen and cabinet makers are in great demand all over the world. But the cabinet is not just restricted to its utilitarian value; when you think of planning your kitchen, the aesthetics form a major part of your plan. Think of the cabinet design based on the different types of cabinets and choose the materials accordingly.

Types of kitchen cabinets

When you discuss the kitchen design with your designated kitchen and cabinet makers you can choose from the following types of kitchen cabinets:

  • Thermofoil: Made of medium-density fibreboards (MDF), this type of cabinet is very strong and durable. The doors come covered in a thin sheet of plastic and are exposed to intense heat for sealing. A great quality of this type of cabinet is that they are low on maintenance and hence are produced for commercial use.
  • Distressed: The distressed-looking cabinets with rubbed-off corners and faded paint gives a nice rustic and antique look and goes well with any kind of door style in your kitchen. They are a top choice for kitchen and cabinet makers as they are easy to make.
  • Louvred: Cabinets in horizontal wooden slats are known by this name. They look very similar to a window and are have spaces in between to provide ventilation.
  • Shaker style: In this style, the kitchen and cabinet makers use flat panels to create a framework—five panels are used to create the framework. This type of kitchen cabinet gives a very simple and classic look to the kitchen.

Materials used for kitchen cabinets

Along with the type of kitchen, it is very important to choose the right material for your kitchen cabinets:

  • Medium-density fibreboard (MDF): made of recycled wood fibres and resin, and made under high pressure, this material is very durable and is used for thermofoil cabinets in commercial setups.
  • Plywood: This is another low-cost material that is often preferred by kitchen and cabinet makers. It is preferred because of its high resistance to moisture and stability. It is either coated with thermofoil, plastic laminate, or wood veneer.
  • Stainless steel: this material is now being heavily used in modern kitchens. Stainless steel cabinets give the kitchen the contemporary look and are used a lot in restaurants and professional kitchens, because they are durable, do not expand and contract like wood, and is easy to clean.

Apart from getting kitchen cabinets made by cabinet makers, you can also opt for ready-to-assemble kitchen cabinets that can be easily put together following a user manual. There are several dealers in Australia who are experts at making kitchen cabinets and designing your kitchen for a new and revamped look.
